We love dresses… and wear them all the time today but where did they come from? From shifts, tunics, frocks to elaborate gowns with whalebone corsets and wooden frames to the little black dress — the story of the dress is a wonderful way to look at how women’s lives have evolved across the centuries.
A few thousand years ago, women in Egypt wore dresses with shoulder straps, usually made of cotton or linen. Ancient Greek women wore a long tunic called a chiton and Roman women wore a dress called a stola. Women in medieval Europe also wore woollen tunics and shifts over inner wear called chemises. Only the rich could afford silk and cotton.
Somewhere along the way, these simple dresses gave way to whalebone and wooden frames under dresses and later these became elaborate gowns with tightly drawn stays and whalebone corsets. The Elizabethans, the Georgians and the Victorians wore elaborate costumes that were drawn so tight that the women could hardly breathe! Not only did it take ever so long to dress up and ladies now needed a strong-armed maid to dress them up, it was also deuced uncomfortable!
As so often happens, wars change civilisation for ever! World War I did the same for the dress! Dresses became simpler (you could either fight a war or dress up, right?) and developed softer, cleaner silhouettes.
Somewhere in the 1900s, Coco Chanel happened and the ‘Little Black Dress’ became an accepted phenomenon and a must in all women’s wardrobes. Today, when we say ‘dress’, it covers the gamut of frocks, gowns, minis, maxis, tunics, shifts, cocktail dresses, pinafores, robes, smocks and of course, the LBD.
