Which Rakhi will you tie?

Seed-Rakhi, Eco-Rakhi, Rakhi-for-a-Cause — now do good with your Rakhi!

Gone are the days when Rakhis were a simple glittering braided thread or a piece of craft that shone and sparkled. Meet the eco-friendly Rakhi — one that can be planted by your brother in a little pot in his balcony and one that will take seed and remind him of you long after Raksha Bandhan has come and gone. Rakhis are also sold for a cause. Buy a Rakhi, help a visually impaired child buy a walking stick. Or buy a Rakhi handcrafted by a farmer’s wife and children and help augment their income.

Meet Gram Art

After the rakhis are made, indigenous seeds for plants that will be useful in a kitchen garden are attached to their centres. The seeds could be lentil, vegetable or even cotton seeds at times.

“We have pasted chawali bhaji seeds on every rakhis to ensure it grows and with it a seed of creeper, big and small trees and plants are also pasted. seeds: bel, gunj, ambadi, corn, mustard, chawalai, amaltash, parijatak,” says Shweta Bhattad from Gram Art Project.

Beejom Seed Rakhis

At Beejom farms, seed rakhis are getting ready. Every Rakhi has a seed in it as a pledge in the season of monsoon to plant a tree. In this case it’s Arhar. Made by women farmers and their children in the classroom as a craft activity it will directly be sold by them at the Beejom Jaivik Upaj Mandi every Saturday.

Says Aparna Rajagopal, the founder of Beejom, “It has been such a fun skill set building activity. The proceeds entirely go to them. Do come and support this beautiful community. They are so excited. Will be available at the Mandi on the farm every Saturday.”

Rakhi For A Cause

Mahima Sharma, a senior journalist, has created the Rakhi for a Cause. These Rakhis are meant to support visually impaired children by buying them walking sticks.

Says Mahima, “We are deeply humbled by the response. Especially the LOVE and TRUST of the INDIAN ARMY that was bestowed upon us for the CHARITY SALE of Rakhis (which I am hosting to buy walking sticks for visually impaired children). CO Col. Vipin Sondhi has ordered Rakhis for his entire batallion!”

While you get to support a noble cause and celebrate with a wonderful Rakhi that spreads happiness in not just your life but the lives of others, you also need to plan your Rakhi wardrobe. After all, visiting your brother on such a special occasion deserves a celebratory ensemble, doesn’t it?!!
